We have provided visually impaired users as well as users with various degrees of hearing loss with customised PC systems to accommodate their needs and allow them to productively use PCs for their studies. For the visually impaired solutions have ranged from utilising magnification software and special colour schemes on screen, high-contrast keyboards to full screen-reader software, which will read out to the user each item underneath the mouse pointer. Through support from the RNID (Royal National Institute for the Deaf people) we have helped users with hearing loss use their PCs as a replacement for their Typetalk terminals, provided advice to web design companies on how to accommodate for web-site visitors with hearing loss.
